Must read: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 12, 13, 16, 17
Could skip, I guess: 6, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15

Today is the 49th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s death.
Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Let us march on poverty (Let us march) until no American parent has to skip a meal so that their children may eat. (Yes, sir) March on poverty (Let us march) until no starved man walks the streets of our cities and towns (Yes, sir) in search of jobs that do not exist. (Yes, sir) Let us march on poverty (Let us march) until wrinkled stomachs in Mississippi are filled, (That’s right) and the idle industries of Appalachia are realized and revitalized, and broken lives in sweltering ghettos are mended and remolded.”

Notes on Guatemalan Civil War

U.S. supported 1956 military coup that overthrew their democratically elected president.

The U.S. was worried that this president was too communistic and that this would be bad for the people of the country.
Two approaches to equality:
Democracy--everyone has a voice and is free to succeed, and some people are rich, others poor
Communism--the money is more evenly distributed (government controls it). No 1% vs 99%

The president and Congress in the United States felt that they had a responsibility to help people of the world, even if it meant getting involved in civil wars and supporting one side. Additionally, leaders in the U.S. felt that if Cuba and Central American countries became Communist, that would be a threat to our way of life, too.

1961. Civil war starts when the man who overthrew the first president was assassinated.
1961. New leader was a dictator
1981. Yet another dictator starts a genocide because of class conflict and racism.
In Guatemala, the poor people (bottom third) made much, much less than in U.S.
1981-1986. Nearly 200,000 Mayans killed
People would disappear
Mass unmarked graves.
Esperanza's brother was killed
1982. Esperanza and Estevan are snuck out of Guatemala by Maddie and the priest
1982. Maddie goes on TV and says, "we have a legal obligation to help these people."
Esperanza's name:  Think in terms of symbolism. Esperanza means "Hope," and she, as well as all Mayans, needed Hope. The dictator was trying to crush hope.
