The Guatemalan Civil War
Estevan and Esperanza had to come to the U.S. because they were in danger of being killed during the civil war because they were protesting what the government was doing. Many Central American and South American countries experienced Communist revolutions during the 60's and 70's. Estevan and Esperanza and their families fought for the rights of the common man, the peasants, the Communist side.
Sting wrote a song protesting the Chilean Civil War, which was virtually the same as theGuatemalan Civil War and is therefore his message also relates to this book. Here's his song:
They Dance Alone.
The idea in the song is that they only way that people could protest what was going on without getting killed was to all dance together without any men, showing that the men had been killed.
Here's some background information on the Guatemalan Civil War.
